What's deductible?
- Nightly rental rate for business nights
- Cleaning fees (prorate by business/personal if mixed trip)
- Airbnb service fees
- Parking at the Airbnb (business portion)
Mixed business/personal trips
If you fly to a 3-day conference then stay 2 extra days for fun:
- Airfare: fully deductible (primary purpose was business)
- Airbnb for 3 business nights: deductible
- Airbnb for 2 personal nights: not deductible
- Meals on business days: 50% deductible
Airbnb vs. hotel
The IRS doesn't care whether you stay at the Four Seasons or a studio apartment on Airbnb. Lodging is lodging. The only requirement is that the cost is reasonable and not lavish for the business purpose.
Fun fact: Airbnb often provides a more detailed receipt than hotels, making it easier to document your deduction.
