Types of Deductible Business Insurance
Almost every type of business insurance is deductible: General liability (covers injuries, property damage), Professional liability / E&O (covers mistakes, negligence), Workers' compensation (required if you have employees), Commercial property (covers business assets), Business interruption (covers lost income during closures), Cyber liability (covers data breaches), Product liability (covers defective products), Commercial auto (business vehicle coverage), Key person insurance (covers loss of essential employees). How to Deduct Insurance Premiums
Sole proprietors deduct business insurance on Schedule C, Line 15. Partnerships report on Form 1065, and S-corps on Form 1120-S. The deduction is taken in the year the premium covers, not necessarily when you pay. If you prepay a 12-month policy, you deduct the portion that covers the current tax year. Multi-year prepaid premiums must be prorated across the coverage period.Example: Contractor's Insurance Costs
You run a contracting business. Annual insurance premiums: General liability $2,400, workers' comp $5,600, commercial auto $1,800, tools/equipment floater $600 = $10,400 total. All $10,400 is deductible on Schedule C. At the 24% bracket plus 15.3% SE tax, that saves you roughly $4,100 in total taxes.
What's NOT Deductible
Personal insurance policies are not deductible as business expenses — personal auto, homeowner's, personal umbrella, life insurance (with some exceptions for key person policies). If you use your car for both personal and business purposes, only the business-use portion of the auto insurance premium is deductible. Self-employed health insurance has its own special deduction rules (see our health insurance deduction page).
